Tomáš Vávra · independent electronics and firmware engineer

From electronics to software. One system that works.

I develop electronics and firmware, connect devices to software and diagnose problems in operation. I can help with a new device or a specific change to an existing one.

How I can help

What are you working on?

01

Developing a device or adding a feature

I design electronics and PCBs, bring up hardware and develop firmware. The task might be a working prototype, a new feature or a change to an existing design.

02

Connecting a device to software or other equipment

I develop communication interfaces, drivers and device libraries so software can configure equipment, read measurements or control its operation.

03

Tracking down intermittent faults

I investigate faults that occur only occasionally or arise from interactions between electronics, firmware, applications and communication. The work spans finding conditions that reproduce the problem, identifying its cause and verifying the fix.

04

Adding measurement or automatic control

I integrate sensors, data acquisition and control for a specific task, such as recording operating data, monitoring equipment or automating a repeated operation.

Engineering in practice

Selected work

Selected experience from professional and personal projects. Each study describes the starting point, my role and the resulting solution.

01 Testing and diagnostics of CAN devices

USB adapter prototype for CAN FD

I developed firmware and a .NET library to connect two CAN FD buses to a PC and record traffic on an SD card. The tested prototype provided a basis for Oakrey’s further hardware development.

02 Laboratory automation

New firmware for a robotic manipulator

I rewrote both modules’ prototype firmware in C on the same hardware. A shared library and bootloader supported each module’s own axis-control routines; calibration no longer required code changes for each unit.

03 Laboratory instrumentation

Stabilising a high-voltage amplifier

Instability during short-pulse generation was resolved by combining changes to the analogue compensation with firmware limits on the rate of voltage change.

04 Garden irrigation

Irrigation control with local measurements

Inaccurate rainfall data and irrigation with no water available distorted the soil water model. Local measurements and checks on actual water use improved the model and helped detect faults.

Engineering skills

Technical experience

When diagnosing complex hardware/software systems, I work with board schematics, an oscilloscope and firmware and application debuggers. Where needed, I modify the PCB for measurements, analyse communication or trace system execution. I connect findings across these parts to identify the cause of a fault.

Working together

We can start with a specific task

A measurement task, device library or firmware change can be a complete assignment. Describe the equipment and the result you need. We can agree on the scope and how to verify the outcome; if the solution is still unclear, we start by identifying what needs to be investigated.

About

I’m Tomáš Vávra

I’m an independent electronics and firmware engineer. I have worked professionally in these fields since 2014. I help companies develop devices, take measurements and solve technical problems. I present my work under the VAVRA Systems name.
